Swimdo Research Plan on Drowning and Water Safety

Starting Strong: Our 2024 Drowning Prevention Survey Plan

In 2023, Swimdo had the privilege of attending the World Conference on Drowning Prevention (WCDP) in Perth, Australia. This global gathering was not only inspiring but also deeply educational; it broadened our understanding of international efforts and reaffirmed how closely our mission aligns with neighboring countries facing similar challenges.

One key takeaway from WCDP was loud and clear:

“Without data, we’re just guessing.” We were reminded repeatedly that reliable data is crucial for planning effective drowning prevention strategies. Unfortunately, Indonesia does not yet have a national system for collecting drowning statistics, which presents a major obstacle to informed intervention.

Taking the First Step—Starting at Home

To address this gap, we’re taking matters into our own hands. In 2024, Swimdo is launching a local data collection initiative right here in Bali, where our organization is based. We’re beginning with a student-focused survey to better understand children’s knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to water safety—especially those living in coastal and high-risk areas.

Our 2024 Plan

Target: Survey 1,000 students in Gianyar Regency, Bali

 Focus Areas:

  1. Awareness of water hazards
  2. Confidence and ability in water
  3. Behavior in and around aquatic environments

Data Partners:
We also plan to collect drowning incident data from multiple official sources, including:

  1. Search and Rescue Agencies (Basarnas)
  2. Lifeguard Services
  3. Regional Disaster Management Agencies (BPBD)
  4. Hospital and clinic records This dual approach—surveying students and gathering real-world incident data—will provide a more accurate picture of the drowning risks children face in our region.
